Coaching is a unique profession. It’s one of the few spaces where individuals openly share deeply personal, confidential, and often privileged information. As the adage goes, with great power comes great responsibility. This is what makes coaching so meaningful and rewarding — and it also introduces nuances, complexities, and boundaries that many of us are navigating for the first time.
What makes Mento especially unique is that all of you are operators. You bring firsthand leadership experience into your coaching relationships, which creates incredible depth and credibility — and occasionally, situations that require thoughtful judgment. We regularly receive great questions from you on how to navigate dynamics that are unique to coaching (e.g., Can I coach both a manager and their direct report?) as well as those specific to Mento (e.g., I previously worked with this person — can I coach them?).
Over the past year, we’ve been closely tracking your questions and feedback. In response, we’ve developed the Mento Coach Code of Conduct, a comprehensive guide that brings together:
- Professional standards grounded in ICF principles and The Mento Way
- Mento-specific policies (including One Platform and Conflict of Interest guidelines)
- Practical, real-world scenarios to help guide your decision-making
We will continue to evolve this as new questions arise and as our community grows. Our goal is to ensure your coaching experiences are seamless and well-supported — so you can focus on what matters most: coaching and making an impact.
As always, please reach out to coachsupport@mento.co if you’d like to review a specific scenario (it’s always better to err on the side of caution!) or if there’s additional guidance you’d like to see included.Thank you for all that you do to make this community so special.
