Completion/Renewal Conversations

Why They Matter and How to Hold Them

At Mento, we ask coaches to hold completion/renewal conversations because they are a critical part of supporting a Member’s long-term growth. Renewal is not about “selling” coaching. It’s about helping the Member pause, reflect on their journey so far, and decide how they want to build on the momentum they’ve created.

Coaching is not a quick fix. For most Members, meaningful change happens over time as they develop new patterns, shift perspectives, and grow their leadership capacity. Renewal conversations help them see their progress in context and consider what continued partnership could make possible.

Why Renewal Conversations Matter

A renewal conversation creates space to:

  • Celebrate growth and progress so far
  • Reflect on shifts in mindset, leadership, or behavior
  • Explore what feels unfinished or aspirational
  • Co-create clarity about the next phase of their journey
  • Help the Member name how they want to sustain or expand their development

This aligns with Mento’s belief that coaching is a partnership, not a series of disconnected sessions. It also helps Members re-anchor in their bigger “why” as they decide what’s next.

How to Approach Renewal Conversations

Renewal conversations often happen naturally in the final two to three sessions of the initial term of a coaching engagement. Your role is to hold the frame with presence and curiosity, making it a reflective and empowering moment for the Member.

You might say:

“As we come toward the end of this phase of our work together, I’d love to take a moment to reflect on how you’re seeing your growth. What feels most valuable about this journey so far? And what would make the next stage of coaching most meaningful for you if you chose to continue?”

Or:

“You’ve done a lot of work in this space over the past few months. As you think about where you are now and where you want to go, what would continuing this partnership make possible for you?”

This approach allows the Member to articulate their own progress and desires for the future. If they’re eager to continue, help them define what they want from the next chapter. If they feel complete, support them in naming how they’ll sustain their growth without a coach.

Many times although the Member does not control the budget or the final decision to continue, they do carry strong influence and if they advocate for a continuation with supporting reasons that benefit the business, they often are able to convince their manager / L&D decision maker and continue coaching. Your role as Coach is to help them organize their thoughts. Tara is available as needed to guide you through this.

Framing Tip: Coach the Person, Not the Renewal

Renewal isn’t about convincing the Member to stay. It’s about creating space for them to reflect, recognize their progress, and decide what growth looks like from here. Your role is to stay present, curious, and in partnership—not to drive an outcome.

Sample Language Bank for Renewal Conversations

Here are four ways to open or deepen a renewal conversation:

  1. “As we near the end of this chapter in our work together, what are you noticing about how far you’ve come? And what feels most alive for you as you think about what’s next?”
  2. “You’ve built a lot of momentum here. What would continuing our partnership allow you to explore or sustain in this next stage of your leadership?”
  3. “Where do you feel complete in this work? And where might there still be room to grow, stretch, or solidify?”
  4. “As you reflect on this coaching journey so far, what feels most meaningful? If we were to continue, what would you want the next phase to look like?”
  5. “What do you see as the work ahead for you? How could a continued partnership support that?”

Key Takeaways for Coaches

  • Renewal conversations are a natural part of the coaching arc.
  • They help Members anchor their progress and explore what’s next.
  • Approach with curiosity, not pressure.
  • If needed, Mento can support logistics and next steps once the Member expresses interest in continuing.
