This means that we’ve identified two great coach options for a new member and are setting you and the member up for a chemistry call.
Chemistry calls are initial 30-minute calls between a coach and a potential member. They are a great way for members to experience a rapport and connection with each coach to see if they are the right fit for the coaching process together. Similarly, chemistry calls are a great way for coaches to have a strategic session with the member to help frame what their coaching sessions together would look like and understand the compatibility of the member and coach before formalizing a coaching relationship and scheduling bi-weekly sessions.
Chemistry calls are not interviews nor are they the first coaching session - Coaching Kickoff #1. Kickoff #1 is a consult and a much more comprehensive and deeper exploration of the member's goals and challenges once you’ve booked a recurring 1:1. Chemistry calls are typically a teaser for what a full-blown coaching session might look like.

Below are some powerful questions that you can ask in chemistry calls to aid you and the member in determining whether you are a good match for each other. Please note that these are an assortment of questions you can bring into your chemistry calls and are not arranged in any particular order with the category. Come up with similar questions and a flow that you like!

- What are you looking for in a coaching relationship?
- Have you worked with a coach before? If yes, what was your experience like?
- What aspects of previous coaching relationships worked well for you and what didn't?
- What led you to seek coaching?
- What are some of your recent experiences that you might want to bring to coaching?

- Can you share a bit about your background and current situation?

- What specific outcomes are you hoping to achieve through coaching?
- How do you envision the coaching process helping you; personally or professionally?
- What challenges or obstacles do you anticipate in achieving your goals?

- How will you know if the coaching engagement has been successful for you?
- Are there specific metrics or indicators of progress that are important to track?
Looking forward:
- I am confident I can help you with your goals because of x, y or z…
- Based on our conversation, how do you feel about moving forward with coaching?
- Are there any concerns or reservations you'd like to address before making a decision?
- Do you have any questions about what to do next to select a coach and set up coaching sessions with them?
- At the end of your call, please let your member know that once they have completed both chemistry calls, they can proactively book bi-weekly coaching events with the coach that they want to work with through the Mento app or send any feedback to their Mento point-of-contact. Otherwise, their Mento point-of-contact will be in touch with them to help them pick their coach.
- Immediately following each of your first 5 chemistry calls, please go to the Chemistry Call Self-Assessment worksheet in Templates and complete the questionnaire.
- Send any lingering questions to coachsupport@mento.co!
- Sit tight - Someone from the Member Onboarding Team will reach out to let you know if the member chose to work with you or the other coach.
- If they chose to work with you - great! Go ahead and send the member a message in the Mento app encouraging them to book bi-weekly coaching sessions with you.
- If they chose to work with the other coach - that’s okay! It’s totally normal for new coaches to lose the first few chemistry calls. Use the Chemistry Call Self-Assessment to receive feedback and improve.
Do not fret. EVERY coach loses chemistry calls, especially when you are new to coaching. Losing a few chemistry calls is great feedback. It just means that you haven’t nailed the chemistry call… yet! #GrowthMindset. You can work on:
- Honing your offer
- Structuring your chemistry call and the questions you want to ask.
- Cutting your teeth as a coach. Remember: chemistry calls ARE coaching conversations - not casual chats! Asking intentional and thoughtful questions to uncover what the member wants out of their coach is important.
Whatever it is, reach out to Tara or your Mentor Coach to debrief and get feedback on your style.
